1. Originally, White-flake was the only survivor of the Peaceful Village. I only added Penda later, because it is easier to write from the point of view of a human (and easier for the reader to relate).
2. All my dogs have given something to White-flake, but the main source of inspiration, the dog that started everything, was never mine. It belonged to a neighbour. I don't think I ever got too close to her, really.
3. In the 1998 version of the story, White-flake's name was actually Moldika, named after one of our dogs at the time, Molda (Molda wasn't white, though...)
4. In the final version, White-flake's role is quite important (those who've read the book know just how important, but let's not throw around any spoilers, shall we?). She's the only link Penda has to the past and in many ways, she helps him keep his identity as an inhabitant of the Peaceful Village.
5. If anyone is curious as to what happens to White-flake after the story finishes, rest assured that she lives a long and happy life in the City of White Marble, accompanying Penda on his missions. Her descendants will be known as the Errand-bearer dogs and they will accompany their masters on long and dangerous journeys (one of them will be given to Eagle the Path-finder). Later on a statue will be built to her in the City of White Marble, and her story will spread far and wide in all the corners of the world (and this is how it reached us now ;) )
